San Francisco, within its very finite boundaries, contains a seemingly infinite number of diverse worlds. They mix, spill into each other, and co-exist in ways that can be as breathtaking as the natural topography they cover.
The images and information presented here are intended to offer a glimpse of what can be seen and experienced in the different areas of San Francisco. All of the original photos were taken from publicly accessible vantage points.
The postcards were obtained at antique shows and paper fairs in and around San Francisco and scanned for this site. Postcards with writing were selected over those without, to include more local history than just the pictures alone.
Go out and play. This section includes a set of guides designed to lead you through many celebrated and locally loved areas of San Francisco on foot and via public transportation.
Updated March 2017: View a comprehensive photo tour of the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park. Plants and landscapes in styles from all over the world are on display in this vast, seasonally changing park within a park.
